Chapter Thirteen

“I thought that thing would never end,” Graham said on the way to Bella’s apartment. “Did you hate it?”

“Did I hate what?” Bella asked.

“The dinner.”

“Of course not. Why would I hate it? It was very nice, and for a good cause.”

“It was boring.”

“Not all of it. The survivors’ stories were inspiring.”

“True. But listening to the researcher was worse than reading a medical textbook. Much worse. At least the textbooks are understandable.”

Bella chuckled. “Since I’ve never read one, I wouldn’t know, but I’ll admit his talk went over my head. The Spitzers were nice,” she added. “And so were Doris and Gus. She cracked me up.”

“What did you think of Fern?”

She debated whether to hedge but decided she might as well be honest. To some extent, anyway. “She wasn’t very friendly. To me.” But she sure as hell had been to Graham.

“Yeah, Fern’s a little hard to take sometimes.”

“Did you date her?”

He shrugged. “Not for long. Did she say something to upset you?”

“Why do you ask that?”

“Because when you and she came back from the bathroom, she was smirking and you looked upset.”

Bella shrugged. “Not upset. Just annoyed. She said something catty about my shop.” Which she had, but that wasn’t what had bothered Bella. She’d been surprised when Fern had gone to the restroom with her but not for long.

“I know you won’t mind a little constructive criticism, Bella,” Fern had said in a sticky-sweet voice. “Have you thought about giving your little shop a bit of a face lift? With it being on Main Street, we want to present our best side to the public, don’t we?”

Bella had simply stared at her.

Fern looked in the mirror to put on her lipstick. “I was surprised to see you with Graham tonight.”

“Oh, really? Why?” She knew she shouldn’t have answered but Fern was pissing her off.

Fern laughed lightly. “You’re hardly his type. You’ve heard he’s going to be chief of surgery once Dr. Prior retires, haven’t you?”

“No, I hadn’t heard that.”

“Oh, yes. It’s all but decided. Unless something happens to make the powers that be decide otherwise.”

“What would happen that might make them change their mind?”

“Why, I have no idea. But it’s a prestigious position. Graham is so well suited for the role.”

And you are not.

No, Fern didn’t say that but it had sure as heck been implied. She shook her head, trying to dispel the memories.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Graham asked.

“What, Fern’s insult? She was just needling me. I blew it off.” She’d blown off the comment about the shop. But about Graham, she admitted that had struck a nerve. Still, Graham had told her from the first he wasn’t looking for a long-term commitment. So what difference did it make if Bella was his type…or if he was hers, for that matter?

Bella leaned across the console and kissed him. “I have a much better idea of what we should be doing rather than talking about obnoxious people.”

“What’s that?” He cupped her face in both hands, tracing a thumb over her lips.
